I remember sitting down attempting to begin my college essay. As I wrote and re-wrote, I knew it was all wrong. I couldn’t find the right words to get my point across, and it was becoming all too overwhelming. After getting advice from another “expert,” I felt as if it was no longer my essay; however, this all changed when I met with Mrs. Kashman. Everything sort of fell into place. After meeting with Mrs. Kashman, I felt that she really understood me and what I was trying to say in my essay. She told me that she wasn’t going to write the essay for me but that she was going to lead me in the right direction. She not only helped me with my grammar and sentence structure, but she also helped me to take what I thought was something impossible to put to words, and create something beautiful.

If I had to choose only one person to help me with my college applications, it would be Mrs. Kashman. Mrs. Kashman proved to be an incredibly valuable resource in the college application process. Not only did her extraordinarily critical eye help me improve my college essays, but also her astute insight and trustworthy advice regarding other aspects of my applications guided my creation of what I felt were the most impressive applications I could submit. The college process is complex and emotionally draining. However, Mrs. Kashman made this process effortless by reviewing my college essay and helping me through the entire process itself. Instead of writing the essay for me, she guided me as I wrote the essay myself and then aided me in ameliorating the essay, even when I thought it was complete. She truly cares about her students and doesn’t quit until the essay is as perfect as it could possibly be. Mrs. Kashman instilled in me confidence that I didn’t know existed. Without her I don’t know if I would be as happy as I am today at the school of my dreams.

Some other strategies:
- Ask family members or friends to list your strengths and outstanding personality traits
- Consider events in your childhood that define your current interest
- Consider people who have been your role models or who have influenced you greatly (a grandparent, a teacher, a coach, etc.)
- Talk to your teachers and counselors
- Consider your college and career goals
Writing the Essay:
- Select a topic that is important to you
- Avoid overdone topics or negative positions on a topic
- If you choose a controversial topic, be sure to cover it fairly
- Use vivid supporting details
- Provide information that adds to your resume (Don’t just repeat what is already in the application)
- Be sure that you answer the question that is asked
- Be sure to keep your reader in mind! Strive to keep the reader interested. College admissions officers read hundreds (if not thousands) of essays
- Be careful with your tone

Although many colleges do not require an interview, some colleges still encourage applicants to participate in a personal face-to-face interview. Some interviews are with admissions officers while others may be scheduled with alumni of the colleges to which you are applying. The interview is an excellent opportunity to learn more about a college and to allow the admissions officer to learn more about you.
